Kickboxing Geishas
There’s a new book by Veronica Chambers called “Kickboxing Geishas” about gender in Japan which looks at the changing role of women in modern Japanese society. This is a book that goes beyond the sexualized fantasies about Japanese women and watches how the worldview of the Japanese is changing –despite what the surface of society might look like.
Salon did an interview with the author exploring the various aspects of the book. One of the most interesting things she said is that “[t]his is a revolution without a movement.” It’s an interesting situation, and having been in and out of a lot of Japanese companies over the last year, I have seen a lot of evidence to point to the idea that women are, in fact, taking more power. I’d certainly like to pick up this book to get a more complete understanding of the situation.
Don’t know about the title though.
