Roppongi English: Part 7

This part is a Part 7 in a series of posts in which I will present excerpts from Roppongi English, an English conversation book for Japanese women hoping to hook up with foreign men. You’ve seen the Japanese girls hook up with cool foreign men in Part 5 and Part 6, so now it’s time for the inevitable conclusion of all international relationships born in Roppongi bars: the emotional break up.

Part 7: It’s time to break up with that cheatin’ gaijin boyfriend of yours!

[It looks like Tomoko and Naomi are fighting with their foreign men. It's time to throw all English grammar out the window!]

[How exactly does one "use over" Japanese women? One should also note that the author doesn't bother to provide a translation for the guys' requests that their girls relax. After a couple pages of pleading that the woman in his phone call record was just a friend, Kevin tries to avoid the break-up....]

[Oh Kevin, you smooth talker! Shall we see how Tony and Naomi are doing?]

[And now, the exciting conclusion to the break-up fights!]

[The book seems to imply that Tomoko and Kevin get back together. I'm not really sure what's going on with Tony. Does he get second thoughts after cussing up a storm at Naomi?]

[Ouch, Tony. Ouch.]

[So, a happy ending for Kevin and a sad ending for Tony? Life just isn't fair for shady 38-year-old MC Hammer look-a-likes...]

I have to ask. When Naomi says “Fuck Off asshole! Never come back here”, was that not clear enough for Tony?

Why does he bother asking “Are we over?” in the next panel.

Damn, that dude got her in bed, got her to do Anal, but can’t even calm her down when she’s pissed and ends up loosing her?

Oh well, I guess the sequel will have Tony getting STD’s in Shibuya!

I can imagine a wannabe japanese english speaker in the middle of a heated, emotional row perusing over the ‘roppongi english’ book and saying in broken english “fuck off asshole!”

Seriously, what do jap chicks expect? It’s almost impossible to maintain a relationship in tokyo, where almost all gaijin get treated like a sex god. Even the king of the dorks can score at least 3 girls in a month. That is seriously no joke.

The quality of English really went downhill. Countess Dracula with her “pissed off” – why did she suddenly start with British slang.

Perhaps the author lost his girlfriend to some Roppongi Charisma Man, and this is his way at getting back at the gaijin?

Actually, “pissed off” has found it’s way into American slang and is used all the time, at least it was when I was there last year.

“Pissed off” means mad in America and it’s common and nothing new. I would suspect that in England it has something to do with being drunk?

Am I thinking about things back to front? Just “pissed” in the UK is drunk, but I don’t know about “pissed off” in the US. Damn, I’m forgetting English…

Anyway, I’m eagerly awaiting the sequel, set in the Engrish school, where Kevin tries to pull the MILF whilst avoiding the Hello Kitty set and his school’s anti-fraternising policy, eventually ending up in him being run out of Japan (or being chopped up and scattered all over Roppongi) by his conquest’s Yak husband.

I think Chris is right about “pissed off”. It’s been around in the states for as long as I can remember (20 years+) and just means angry. Sometimes Americans just say “pissed” though, but it never means “drunk” unless you say “piss drunk”.

they translate ‘make love’ to just ‘sex’? is that the way ‘sex’ is used in japan? or is there just no equivalent to ‘make love’

Funny, the comic was supposed to teach English and yet write it grammatically wrong.

What makes this awesome than just the weird translations and some grammatical fallicies is that “sprout fangs” effect the women have when they get angry. That makes this almost completely comical.

o.o I noticed something else too……when that “I notice same woman’s number in your received call record” (one of the grammatically incorrect sentences). I read the Japanese and noticed that Onajijo (or Onajionna) {I’m a bit bad at my Kanji reading, but I am sure of the meaning, so bear with me} as “same woman”. It makes me almost believe the person translating into English was either the same person that wrote the Japanese or that this person didn’t check his own translation.
