Christmas Wishes
I had a few third year junior high school students make some Christmas crafts the other day. The students drew/wrote their Christmas wish or the present they desired in the middle of a wreath and then made Santa heads. Here are the results:

[This girl wanted money. Pretty cool cat, don't you think?]

[This girl wanted an ipod, a tennis racket, and some black pig thing. She also liked Chicken Little.]

[This boy wanted money.]

[This boy wanted perfect grades in all subjects.]

[This boy wanted money, but unlike the other students, he wanted it in dollars.]

[This boy wanted money.]

[This girl wanted Mickey Mouse. Her Santa is pretty cool looking.]

[This boy wanted his own island.]

[This girl wanted money. Is her Santa wearing make-up?]

[As soon as I handed this boy his paper, he whipped out a book and started copying a diagram of the solar system into the center of his wreath. I guess he wanted the planets?]

[This girl wanted money.]

[This girl wanted a Doraemon. I absolutely love the strange looking faces on her Santa and Doraemon.]

[This boy wanted a girlfriend. The Japanese on Santa's hat reads, "A dirty old man is coming."]

Perhaps the boy who drew the solar system just wanted Pluto to be a planet again… Poor poor Pluto.
Fascinating that nearly half of the students wanted cash and the others had fanciful wishes. Only one student wanted tangible gifts (iPod, tennis racquet). I have a feeling most American junior high schoolers would be asking for the iPods and Playstations, not cash or good grades. I wonder what this says about the differences in cultures?

I think it says that Japanese kids traditionally get money as New Year’s gift (o-toshidama) and equate gift-giving with receiving cash more than actual presents.
