Every morning I record part of FTV’s morning program “Mezamashi TV” just in case something interesting and blog worthy shows up. Much like “Good Morning America” or the “Today Show,” FTV’s morning program focuses on light-hearted entertainment news. There are also brief reports on the headlines, such as this report on the discovery of a dismembered corpse in Shinjuku the other day:

In the middle of their report on the facts of the discovery of the corpse, which happened a street near a Japanese school for foreigners, they decided to insert clips of locals commenting on the large number of foreigners in the area. Did you miss it? Here is that particular segment of the report:

The narrator states that judging from the appearance of the corpse, the deceased was either a Japanese man or an Asian foreigner. We then go straight into a clip of an old man who commenting on how he is afraid to wander around the neighborhood alone because there are many foreigners there. Next, a restaurant owner mentions that 80% of her customers are Asian foreigners. After that, the report resumes its summary of the facts by describing the physical traits of the corpse found.

Was it really necessary to include a clip of an old man commenting on how the large number of foreigners make the neighborhood dangerous? It isn’t even clear that the victim or the murderer are foreigners, yet for some reason the report had to include the comments of this random old man? What’s the deal with that?
