More praise for Eastwood’s “Letters From Iwo Jima”

After a commanding performance in the Japanese box office over the weekend, “Letters From Iwo Jima” continues to gain praise from American critics:
-The Los Angeles Film Critics Association has named it the Best Picture of 2006.
-Roger Friedman of Fox News calls it a “masterpiece” and “a huge anti-war statement.”
-The Hollywood Reporter also calls it a “masterpiece,” referring to it as “a different kind of war movie” from most American-produced war films.
The Japanese press is eating up the praise. On this morning’s Mezamashi TV morning show, the reporters were declaring it a contender for an Academy Award. The film critics love it, but will a foreign language film have the appeal with a wider audience needed for an Oscar win?
