Foreign Minister Taro Aso excels in English

November 22nd, 2006 by James

When Foreign Minister Taro Aso was recently asked by the press about the timing of the 6-party talks, he told them the talks would not overlap with the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. When saying the words “Thanksgiving” and “Christmas,” he chose to use the English pronunciation of the holidays instead of the Japanese katakana pronunciation. Today’s Mezamashi TV morning news program decided to call in an gaijin English conversation teacher to check Aso’s English. As the above video shows, the English teacher thought Aso’s English pronunciation was easy to understand. Congratulations on passing your two-word English exam, Mr. Aso!

Just wondering if you’ve see any English speeches he’s done? The Center for Strategic and International Studies has one on video at their website.

I wonder if that guy is the King Eikaiwa Teacher.

How do I get those gigs? I want to get paid to listen to two words and struggle for a comment.

I’m guessing they just plucked him off the street, or perhaps called the nearest eikaiwa and told them to send over a teacher.

His pronounciation of ASEAN + 3 is suspect.
