As some of you who read Occidenalism/The Marmot may already know, blogger Gerry Bevers, who had devoted a great deal of his time conducting and posting research on the historical background of the Dokdo/Takeshima dispute, has been asked by the president of the South Korean university he works for to stop writing about Dokdo on the internet. Apparently some Korean netizens were extremely angry about the information Mr. Bevers was posting, and instead of engaging him in civilized debate, they decided to search out and threaten his employer. As the university president was concerned that Mr. Bevers postings about Dokdo would “damage the reputation” of the school, he requested that Gerry stop writing about Dokdo on the internet.

The sad thing is, Gerry was incredibly civil in his posts and never engaged malicious behavior that would result in damage to a credible academic institution’s reputation. Moreover, his posts were done on his own time, and were presented in an intellectual manner. Unfortunately, it would seem that conducting research that produced results unfavorable to Korea’s territorial claim over the islets and posting it on the internet on one’s own private time is an unacceptable behavior in South Korea. If this is the kind of response one can expect, it’s no surprise that most expat bloggers located in Korea shy away from such blantant challenges to Korea’s Dokdo claims. This news absolutely disgusts me.

While we’re on the topic of viciously retarded Korean ultranationalist rage over opposition to Korea’s territorial claim to Dokdo, here are some pictures of an act of vandalism recently discovered at Kyoto’s Ginkaku-ji (Temple of the Silver Pavilion), a UNESCO World Heritage site. The following graffiti was carved into one of the bamboo fences along the pedestrian walkway in front of the temple:

The graffiti reads “Dokdo” in Korean. Really, what’s the point in such childish vandalism? Is Japan going to give up its territorial claim to the islets because some douchebag scratched the word “Dokdo” into a fence? Boy, it must have brought a ton of satisfaction to the person who carved that. Sadly, his action is just a testament to the stupidity of South Korean ultranationalists.

[Props to Zero for the vandalism images]
