Racial hybrids revealed!

October 29th, 2006 by James

An 19th century Japanese artist’s hilarious depiction of what kind of child is produced when races mix:

Click for the whole fantastic image.

The link was sent to me by Edward Campbell, who asked the following question:

Hi, I came across this humorous 19th century painting depicting a dancing child born to a Japanese woman and a Western man. It is obvious that the artist views such unions as undesirable. I wonder if this view of gaijin marrying Japanese women still exists today?

My answer: While most Japanese people no longer believe that sex with Westerners will produce bearded children, there are still a few Japanese out there who view unions with westerners as undesirable. However, for the most part, I would say that the majority of Japanese people are very accepting of international couples and their children. Many popular celebrities here are the product of Japanese-Western couples, such as Becky, who has an English father and a Japanese mother:

Judging from her picture, you can safely say that female offspring of Japanese-Western unions do not have huge beards (unless she shaves hers). Male offspring of such unions have been known to grow facial hair after reaching adulthood, however.

I can’t be the only one that think ハーフ such as Becky fall only in the extremes of the hotness scale. I think Becky, for example, isn’t even close to being hot.

But Takigawa Crystal? That MTV VJ Rena? Yes please.

It seems Japanese at the time were so impressed by the beard of the western people. And Japanese politician at the time started imitating western people and that is why many of them had beard.

For a good looking “half” you could give a much better example than Becky – 小澤マリア (Maria Ozawa). Thank God for race-mixing!

I forgot; here’s a work-safe Maria Ozawa link. Ave Maria!

スケベ :

As much as I like Maria Ozawa, I don’t think a porn actress would be a good example of “half” Japanese celebrities having mainstream popularity and respect in Japanese society.

I like Tsuchiya Anna (土屋アンナ), who has a Russian-American father and a Japanese mother. She is a fashion model, an actress and a singer…really talented in all of the things she does.

Japanese are very accepting of “half” breeds. So much so that they still call them “halfs”
At least racism in Japan isn’t violent, with lynchings and cross burnings and shit.
My kids are gonna grow up and kick-ass. I know that much.

The term double is taking the role of half. I still use half, but I am think half-breed when I say it. Whether or not that is racist is moot.

Japanese don’t mind sex with foreigners, as long as said foreigner isn’t Black.

And that’s one of the biggest problems here, though it’s a problem everywhere. People assume that when a woman marries a Black man she’s marrying him because he has a big dick. They don’t understand the idea that love could possibly extend to other cultures.

And this is a problem in every non-African country, not just Japan.

I take it you’re not familiar with the anti-Korean riots after the Kanto earthquake in 1923:

and more recently:

Overall there is much less racial tension and violence simply because Japan is still more ethnically homogenous than North America or Europe. Nevertheless, Japanese racists, like racists elsewhere, do use violence against those they hate.

One successful ‘half’ I can think of is Sawajiri Erika, an actress, model and gravure idol. She’s part Algerian, and so is her mother.

Haha, how funny. I suppose all countries had these rumours about what terrible things would happen if one bedded a foreigner. It’s now hard to believe that interracial marriage was illegal in the USA up until the 50s/60s!

Nowadays the Japanese media industry is dominated by half-Japanese people and Korean-Japanese people. Interesting how things change huh? I just wrote an article on my top 10 half-Japanese celebrities.

My daughter’s a haafu and has green eyes like her dad. Can I look forwards to a wealthy retirement if I launch her on a Japanese media career?
