Or maybe it’s their much better 予想GUY commercials and the recent introduction of phone number portability between carriers?

Softbank decided to make call charges between softbank phones free. Basic charge is rather expensive (9600 yen), but they offer 70% discount if one make a contract before Jan 15 of next year.
