Joel’s appearance on Japanese TV (Videos)

October 22nd, 2006 by James

For those of you who missed gaijin-celebrity and Hot Spring Master Joel’s appearance on TV Tokyo’s “Everyone’s Tour Guide: Big Welcome to Everyone Around the World Special“, here it is:

Clip 1: Yukorin and Monkinkin are visiting Beppu and they run into Joel the volunteer onsen guide! He takes them to a special eatery that serves up food cooked over the steams of Beppu’s natural hot springs.

Clip 2: After a commercial break Joel takes Monkinkin to the white waters of Kannawaen Onsen. Monkinkin wonders why Yukorin is and Joel reveals that they are in a male-only bathing area, what a shame! The show then cuts to a segment with Yukorin traveling around on her own, which I have not included because it doesn’t contain Joel (and because it is irritating to listen to her speak).

Clip 3: Joel and Monkinkin take in the sights with the winner of the Ms. Beppu pagent. Monkinkin is excited to hear that Ms. Beppu will be going to an onsen with them, but it turns out it is a sand hot spring, not a pool of water filled with nekkid beauty queens. A lady who works at the onsen uses her amazing English abilities to tell Joel that it is a sand onsen, and Monkinkin cracks some jokes. He tries to joke around with the old man lying next to him, who turns out to be the Mayor of Beppu! Everyone chills out together while warming their feet in hot spring water and Joel talks about how they are working to make Beppu an international tourist destination.

Clip 4: Yukorin and Monkinkin went to various other places in Beppu and they created a Beppu tourism commercial. Joel makes a brief appearance! (The commercial is in Korean because most foreign tourists who come to Beppu are from Korea.)

Impressive work, Joel!

You think Yukorin’s voice is irritating. I don’t. At least she’s cute, I would have enjoyed seeing her half-naked in the onsen.

I think Joel’s foreign accent is irritating, but his enormous, pasty white belly is horrifying. I need some eye bleach.

I too find Yukorin’s voice very annoying. I usually pass by this site and never made any comments but I think Charles comment is a bit harsh. We are all entitled to our personal opinion. Anyhow, nice blog by the way.

Yukorin intentionally talks like a retarded 4 year old because it is “cute”. Sometimes it sounds cute, but most of the time it sounds horribly artificially, for example when she asks Joel to guide them.

Joel speaks Japanese perfectly.
I wanted to see his kid on TV. I saw him on his blog, he looks cute.
Keep up the good work at Beppu, Joel.

James,
I just showed up hoping you might have clips because the show doesn’t air in Oita for another 2 weeks! Sasuga! Cheers for uploading everything.
By the way, the baby at the end with the mayor is my 2nd boy. The older boy didn’t make an appearance this time around.

I know what everyone says about Yukorin and I generally agree, but seeing her off camera you know it’s all a made-up character.

Charles,
if you would like I’ll have the director contact you next time they need someone to do some minstel work.

thanks again James!

Joel

PS Did they cut the mud bath scenes? Those were the funniest

Joel:

All the scenes in which you appear are in this update. If you want an unedited mpeg of the entire Beppu section of the show, I can send it to you. Unfortunately, no mud bath scene was aired!

I too worked with both Joel and Murdo in Beppooo.
Onsen Massa Joel, it’s great to see your work on TV again! I hope you are getting kickbacks from Kannawa En from the amount of publicity you give them, haha.

I use to live in Beppu. Went to APU the international Unviersity there. I think I liked being a resident there. It was nice, and its cool to see how famous such a nice place is and its very small, and I of course don’t consider beppu to be apart of japan. Since there are so many English speakers there. Even at the restuarants. I noticed a lot of foreign tourist who are there tend to not really check out the APU campus. It is something I think they are missing out on. The spectacular view of the city that is.
