Creative Writing
The other day I taught a third year junior high class. Since the class was the most gifted at the school, they were able to try something that would usually end in dismal failure in the “normal” classes: creative writing. Groups of students wrote one sentence on a paper and passed the paper to the next student who added a sentence, with the process continuing until a story was completed. Here 3 of my favorites:
The first story has a moral to it…
An old woman eaten by big bear.
Long Long ago There was a very old woman.
Her name is Misae.
She lived in the trees.
And she saw big bear.
The big bear came to her.
She was eaten by the big bear.
She died.
So we shouldn’t live in the trees.

Most of the kids didn’t like the way this story ended, but I did:
What is this?
Mary is 3 years old.
She lives with her mother and father and sister.
She thinks “What is this?”.
There is white dog in the box.
She think, “It is very beautiful. So I want to this dog.”
She took the dog to her house.
“I’m home, Mom!”
Her mother is suprised to see the dog.
“What is this?”
“It is a dog. It is very beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Yes, It looks nice!! Let’s eat it, Mary!!”

Japan’s X-mas decorations are going to be put up in less than a month, so how we end with a Christmas story?
Christmas Present
Today is Christmas.
Santa Claus is going to give presents to children.
He has a lot of presents.
He has to give presents to many children.
He went to Misae’s house.
But she was not a child.
He was upset.
