Another victory for Japan’s pro-eater

September 24th, 2006 by James

Another feat of eating by Takeru Kobayashi, reported by Crisscross:

BOSTON — Takeru Kobayashi, the world’s champion competitive eater, set a new world record by eating 41 lobster rolls in Boston on Saturday. Three and half minutes into the GoldenPalace.net World Lobster Eating Challenge, Kobayashi had already downed 22 lobster rolls and he could have stopped there.

A team of four eaters, collectively managed just 25 rolls in failing to push Kobayshi throughout the 10-minute contest. It’s another milestone for the Japanese star who has never been defeated in the U.S. since turning professional in 1998. He takes home a prize of $10,000 in winning the GoldenPalace.net World Lobster Eating Challenge.

It’s a rare appearance in the U.S. for Kobayashi who generally stays close to Tokyo with the exception of his yearly trip to Coney Island to take on the Americans in Hot Dogs where he has eaten 53 1/2 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes. His slim frame and introverted nature give no hint into the eating machine that lies within and many feel that has a lot to do with the mystique and global popularity he enjoys.

A true hero.
