HUGE food portions! (Video)

September 21st, 2006 by James

Let’s say you’re making a Japanese TV show about restaurants that serve huge portions of food at really cheap prices. You’ve got a Japanese woman hosting your show, but she’s obviously not going to ruin her figure by eating a 3 kilogram bowl of curry and rice. What do you do? Well, you have her “call her poor friends” who would be interested in such a restaurant. Who are her “poor friends”?

Two black foreigners the crew met in Roppongi yesterday, of course! Here’s the video:

After each of them “eat” a 3kg bowl of curry and rice(the video cuts and doesn’t actually show them eat it all), they’re still hungry! So they each have another 3kg portion of food(or so the editing makes us believe), and they are still hungry! Unfortunately, they are unable to finish their third dishes. Even after eating over 6 kilograms of food, the bill came to less than 2000 yen: it is a perfect restaurant for African foreigners, who are poor and able to eat portions the tiny Japanese can only dream of consuming in a single sitting.

Interestingly enough, the program lists their occupation as freeters, which means they lack full time employment. Perhaps it is really the case, or perhaps it is meant to add to their image of being poor. Also, the Nigerian guy merely parrots exactly what the Jamaican guy says, what’s the deal with that?

Gotta love these Japanese programs further pushing stereotypes into the weak minds of Japanese viewers…

I wonder how being フリーター affects their visa status…

If they are freeters, they probably are either A) overstaying another visa or B) have permanent residency/ visa from marrying a Japanese national. Japan doesn’t give work visas for “freeter” work.

If the tiny, dainty Japanese eaters can’t consume the restaurant’s huge portions, they’d better hope there are enough poor gaijin patrons around to keep them in business. :-p

I meant it tongue in cheek really, but yes, I would imagine they are either freeters overstaying, or more likely not freeters at all but just saying so for the programme.
Getting a visa is painful enough WITH a job (and guarantor) to back you up.
Great blog, by the way. Enjoy it daily. Keep up the hard work.

My girlfriend is japanese and could eat all that. Her stomach is like a bottomless pit or a gateway to another dimension. She eats 2x as much as I do, and stays skinny as a stick. I don’t know how she does it. I need to tell her about this restaurant, she loves curry and rice.

I wonder if the two men knew they would be portrayed in such a racist, stereotypical way (how could they not if they live in Japan and have seen japanese tv) if so, why allow themselves to be subjected to that? Strange.

Mayumi, its not all that bad is it? I mean they showed footage of the brothers dancing. As most Japanese people know, black people are good at dancing, and dancing is a good thing, so this is kind of a positive portrayal of African immigrants do you not think?
