Look, Japanese people hate Koreans.
From YouTube, a Japanese politician declares that “Japanese people dislike/hate Koreans” on a TV program:
The description of the video on YouTube:
To say “The Japanese dislike Korean” has been a taboo for a long time. This is the scene from Japanese TV program at Prime time, and this TV program has popularity among Japanese. The Japanese diet member Nishimura Shingo said “The Japanese dislike Korean” with courage, this word could have been shared among most Japanese people. Korean people’s character are utterly different from Japanese people’s. Korean often break promise without hesitation…and they often tell lies, but they don’t have sense of sin at all. We Japanese should not trust Korean people. They do any dirty thing in order to accomplish their own goal. It is very dangerous to trust Korean people.
An ignorant and generalizing comment from a Japanese person who clearly fits within Nishimura’s definition of “the Japanese”. Seeing as there are still a lot of Japanese people are big fans of Korean dramas, Korean movies and Korean musicians, I wouldn’t really say that it would be fair to declare that the Japanese people dislike Koreans.

The Japanese hate koreans about as much as I hate sex. That is if you are talking about Korean movie stars. Still, I hear it’s hard for a third generation Korean to be treated like a native Japanese person. And this is something that should be a given when you ae born in a country.

The Japanese do dislike Koreans. That is a general statement, and it’s true. It doesn’t mean all Japanese hate Koreans. It doesn’t mean Japanese people dislike Korean dramas. It just means that, generally speaking, Japanese people dislike Koreans. Just as rednecks dislike black people. And Arabs dislike Jews. Sure, there may be a handful of black Arab Jews who love everyone, and you may personally know those people, but that does not disprove the general statement.
Japanese people do dislike Koreans. And the Chinese. And blacks. And everyone else who isn’t Japanese. (Generally speaking.)
I think the first step everyone needs to take is to recognize that racism does exist. You can talk about how racism is declining, or how young people are not as racist as the conservative politicians, or you could conclude that it’s OK for Japan to be racist, but to flat-out deny that Japanese people dislike Koreans is ridiculous.

After Japanese Annexation of Korea,
in order that Koreans may escape severe social position discrimination,
they escaped from the Korean Peninsula with their intention, and have passed into Japan.
It is the so-called secret passage.
When Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration,
Korean residents in Japan claim that they are “victorious nation people”,
give their name in “the Korean Occupation Forces”,
and began to riot in various places in Japan.
Japanese men having been gathered together for the battlefield,
only a woman, a child, and old men, were remained in Japan .
Koreans slaughtered such remained Japanese people cooly
and occupied the very good piece of land in front of a station .
Of course, the Japanese woman who lived there was raped merciless and banished.
Naturally, Japanese people came to hate Korean residents in Japan strongly.
Therefore, Korean residents in Japan came to give their name in the Japan name.
Giving own’s name in the Korea name,it is like declaring that he is an offender.
Koreans cooperated with the communist,
They began to fabricate history by using mass communications.
“Forcible taking has been carried out by Japanese.” and
“Korean land having been taken by Japan, we came Japan reluctantly” etc.
Not apologizing for a rape crime and continuing occupying land,
“Although we have done no bad things , we are discriminated “.
They advertized saying “We are received unjust discrimination by Japanese”. etc.
The Japanese of the recent generation who does not know the Korean Occupation Forces,
came to have a guilty feeling for Korean residents in Japan .
Korean residents in Japan began the enterprise in the very good piece of land which occupied.
It was “pachinko”,so-called pinball game as gamble.
Even now, 80 % of a pachinko contractor is Koreans.
Pachinko is 30 trillion yen industry. The scale is larger than the auto industry.
The pachinko industry is known for tax evasion in Japan and the remittance to North Korea.
“As long as there is money of pachinko in Japan, North Korea will be safe ” (Kim Jong-il) .
The money of pachinko is flowing to mass communications and the politician, and controlling them.

“Naturally, Japanese people came to hate Korean residents in Japan strongly.”
Oda, I am sorry to say this, but your remark just reminds me the comments many Koreans have made when I am talking to them on the Internet: “since Koreans suffered under Japanese rule, Koreans are justified to keep hating Japanese”
I do not hate Koreans. I don’t know how to hate someone whom I have never met.
If you have complaints of people who are sending money to North Korea, it is just them that should be blamed, not all of Koreans are doing that. Just blame those people who are doing that.
I think a Japanese who hates Koreans , for that matter, any people , based on the nationality is losing friends who love Japan and who sympathize with Japanese perspectives

Thank you Ponta, well said. Although, it seems clear to me that all this hatred towards the Koreans is to disguise any admittance to the atrocities the Japanese have committed on the Koreans. To this day, the Japanese will not admit to any wrong doing. Oda has their history mixed up, because everything Oda says about what Koreans did to the Japanese is in fact the other way around. Even Japanese scholars have shed some light on the subject that supports what really happened. I do not hate the Japanese, though I do believe they should take some responsibility for their actions and make a formal apology to the Koreans and the Chinese who till this day are still considered second class citizens in Japan. But the fact that they won’t do that because doing that would mean to admit any wrong doing really shows the true character of some, but not all Japanese people. The Germans have made their peace, it’s about time the Japanese did as well.

oda, I have to say that your speaking from the false textbooks you’ve been learning from. I’m a Japanese/American historian, and the history textbooks the Japanese schools have been teaching the students are strongly unacceptable. As a fellow Japanese, I do hate to say this, but what we should feel ashamed as a nation for what we’ve done to the Koreans in the past and even now.
Speaking as a Nation, we’re going the wrong way, and eventually, the world will know the truth. We can’t hide these facts forever, and eventually we’ll suffer because of our wrong ways.

Nor do Japanese textbooks say this. Even the infamous Tsukurukai textbook is careful to avoid being too inflammatory regarding the Koreans. About the only thing I can think of offhand that would definitely annoy them is the firm comments that Takeshima is Japanese territory as opposed to ‘disputed’ (this was a recent directive for a change I read about somewhere). School textbooks certainly do not say that Koreans in Japan in WW2 slaughtered remaining Japanese and took the land in front of the station. In fact the idea itself is ludicrous in the extreme. I very much doubt that oda got his ideas from textbooks. It is also a bit strong to claim that Japanese history textbooks are “strongly unacceptable” (unless you refer to say the 1943 Mombusho standard History of Japan?).

Korea and Japan racism or Japan and Korea racism. Does it exist? Yes and No. We have to divide racism into 10 steps.
1) Korea and Japan Politicians: Politically Two country are rivals. It has been until Chosun Dynasty ( Korea) and Meji Period (Japan). Korea and Japan Nationalism was born.
2) World War II and 36 Years of Occupation: Japan always wanted Korea and Koreans to be Japanese side in Land Territory or 2nd or 3rd class Japanese. Why?? Military or Economical Man power. Korea 36 years Korean nationalism was born. Easy excuse and Easy target for Japan.
3) Economical: Korea and Japan are rival in most areas. It does not matter if Korea receives technology from Japan or Japan receives technology from Korea. At the end. Two countrys are rival in Economical areas.
4) Sports: Soccer is perfect example: Korea and Japan rivalry. Recently it has been Ice Hockey Brawl between Korea and Japan during Asian winter game in China.
5) Culture: Korea and Japan: Culture export has open. Japan: Korean drama’s are popular. Korea: Japanese music and fashion books are popular. Supply and Demand: Japan demand for Korean culture is higher than Korea demand for Japanese culture. why?? 36 years Japanese occupation feedback again easy target for Japan.
6) Comfort Woman: Yes, Korean national character are stubborn. Much more persistent than Japanese people.
7) National Character: Koreans: Hot and Cold. Japanese: Cold Warm.
9) Racial Prejudice: Talking about race. Koreans and Japanese are related.
Prejudice: Political Viewpoint: Prejudice exist. Economical Viewpoint: 50/50 percent Prejudice exist. Cultural/Human point: Prejudice does not exist.
10) End Result: Race: Koreans and Japanese or Japanese and Koreans are related. Politically and Economically: Koreans and Japanese are rivals.
Racial Prejudice between Koreans and Japanese its 50/50 percent.

You know, the Koreans hate the Japanese as much as we hate them.
When I’ve visited Korea this summer, I heard all these things on the news about Japan. To be honest, I felt ashamed for the things our country has been doing to Korea.
Another thing that really struck me was that this one Korean boy was saying ‘Japan is gonna sink to the very bottom of the ocean!’

Hey, who’s “we”
I am Japanese. I don’t hate Koreans.
Do you hate Koreans? That is too bad.
And I hear not all Koreans hate Japanese.
Have you visited Korea this summer? Has “this summer” already arrived in Korea?.
And do you read Korean? I envy you.
And is Korea broadcasting all the bad things about the colonization even now, without mentioning good aspects it brought about? —-There are bad and good aspects of everything——That is horrible, I didn’t know Korea was such a grudging dominated society. Thank you for the information.
You don’t have to feel ashamed just as Koreans do not have to be ashamed just because a Korean national massacred students at VT in the US, though I think we need to learn from bad things Japan inflicted to then Korea.

Koreans & Chinese don’t hate japanese ppl, infact they pity them, but they do hate japanese government for sure.
But, Europeans & Americans hate Japanese ppl and ldon’t care about japanese government. This sound bit irony but very true, you will know if you lived on USA, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Australia.
9/10 ppl from USA & Europe likely to dislike japanese ppl, infact they hate most asians anyway.
Japanese women & children are easy pray for americans & europeans.

Hate begets hate. Simple as that. Japanese, in general, are racist against non japanese if you go by the commonly accepted definition of racism. However, the concept of racism is not well understood by most japanese.
If you were to describe what kkk or neo-nazis stand for, most of them will be appalled. However, japanese don’t perceive themselves as racists when they make hate speech against non japanese because they consider it as an attempt to do away with “undesirables” of society. Japanese are very self-righteous people for the lack of better expression. Even when they’re clearly in the wrong, they will not budge until they themselves are convinced.
What’s necessary in japan is a civil rights act much like the one in the US. Make people aware what racism is. Show them examples of what hate does. For that, there needs to be a civil rights leader, perhaps somebody like MLK. For that, like minded japanese have to rise up, like the gakusei_undou of the 60’s. For that, catalyst is needed. Let’s hope that the catalyst is not another war…

I disagree that it’ll change in time without any effort. There is a fundamental problem with japanese politics that harbors racist behaviors.
For example, strictly speaking, japan does not guarantee free speech nor the equal rights. Yet, it allows discriminatory signs against non japanese citing that japan respects free speech while disciplining school teachers for speaking against the government white washing of the past. LDP isn’t going to change anything unless there is enough chatter generated by the people, especially the minority.

Your statement is too general to discuss.
“Japanese, in general, are racist against non japanese”
Huh? It could mean anything.
“japan does not guarantee free speech nor the equal rights. ”
Huh? It is obvious free speech and the equal right are constitutional right, Be more specific what you want to say.
“disciplining school teachers for speaking against the government white washing of the past”
Huh? I don’t know what you are talking about. Again be more specific, cite a news or something.
And I suggest you not to use Japanese name when you are obviously not Japanese: not that non-Japanese can not use Japanese name but commenting on the only posts related to Korea. expressing Korean nationalist opinion just makes many people suspect if you have political agenda, ulterior motive etc. and just want to spread the propaganda.

I don’t know which Japanese you are talking about. What do you mean by saying “Japanese, in general, are racist against non japanese” “Japanese are very self-righteous people for the lack of better expression.”?
Some Japanese are not used to seeing foreigners, and most of the Japanese don’t speak English, so you might have experienced some annoying moments in Japan, but that doesn’t mean they are racist.
Your name seems to be a Japanese one. If so, you probably too are racist, are you?

Indeed, much of Japanese ‘racism’ is actually nationalism, in the minzokushugi rather than kokkashugi sense. It doesn’t matter that you’re not Asian, it matters that you’re not Japanese.

There are about 1,000,000 Korean-japanese in japan.
They are using assumed Japanese names as you may know.
According to Asahi newspaper of liberal one in Japan, only 245 persons were ordered to come to work in mainland during the term annexed to Japan.
Japanese conservatists say even it is natural as Japanese citizens, though.
Anyway, this guy is not supposed the one of 245 or the ancestors.
Proud persons choose nationalizing to Japan or returning to their fatherland.
The rest are wretched lives of sticking to Japan with complaining all the way and dying with leaving no achievement.
Most of Korean-Japanese girls are not hoping to marry Korean-Japanese boys.
So let’s forget about them because their society is melting away.

I’m a Korean guy who accidentally stumbled across this website. I think its quite a naive comment to say that it is all one country’s fault. I believe due to history Korea and Japan are the way they are. However, if you look at any neighbouring countries: Britain and France, Singapore and Malaysia, India Pakistan, you will always have neighbouring rivalries and disputes in the form of racism as a whole.
I have many japanese friends, and friends from all over the globe to be frank, and I’ve not yet had a problem with any of them. Having lived in the UK though, whenever I do go to korea I can see that it is still a very xenophobic society in need of some serious cosmopolitanism (if this is a word!)
However, I found that the japanese are as equally xenophobic, but they do not express themselves as much due to social restrictions and it seemed to me that they even want to be something else other than a south-east asian person.
Speaking from London, I sincerely believe that both countries have yet a lot to work on if they are to be anything like the USA or the UK (London at least).
Let us all not dwell so much on where we are from but who we are!
Take care everyone.

I accidentally stumbled into this website. And I’m not Korean nor am Japanese.
I’m fully aware of this hatred going on between these races. I am working for a Korean company and I have to say every now and then, I hear him talk rudely about Japanese. I guess it just goes around them eh? Actually it’s tiring to hear him speak negatively of Japanese people; now I am having the impression that he’s not any different. I think lowly of him now. And I don’t respect him anymore.
It’s also an insult to our part that he doesn’t even respect and listen to our grievances. He thinks that we are just telling a lie. His counterparts have violated a lot of laws here and are working illegally. Anyway, I’m not saying all of them are the same.
But after reading Hong’s comment, it shed light to my queries. My gut feeling’s right. They are xenophobic.
I just want to express how frustrated I am at this racist issue. Even us neighboring asian countries are being thrown by this hate.
I have come to think that I will not comply to their standards and will not absorb their hate speech. Come to think of it. We’ll all die eventually so what’s with being superior?
Oh anyway, here’s something I also want you to read; http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2007/aug/06/yehey/top_stories/20070806top7.html
Thanks for reading this comment. And I hope to end the hate.

one more topic. if Koreans have such a problem with the Japanese, why do they buy so many Japanese products? for example, Lexus is the best selling import car in Korea. Japanese comic books, Japanese motorcycles, Japanese pianos, Japanese amplifiers, are all bought by Koreans. It only raises Japan’s brand value. Korea’s brand value is still very low. korean immigrants in the U.S.A. all buy Japanese cars. Why? Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Lexus, Infiniti, Subaru, Mitsubishi, etc. Koreans love Japanese cosmetics such as Shiseido. Koreans don’t like their own cars such as Hyundai and Kia. That’s the part I don’t understand about Koreans.. they are so proud, but they immigrate so much. If they are so proud of Korea, then they should stay in Korea. koreans have a bad reputation overseas. koreans love Japanese digital cameras. korea’s government is severly corrupted and only brainwashes it’s people to hate. they don’t know owhat a democracy is yet.

It’s the same sentiment of Japanese People towards Europe once upon a time. Japanese were very proud of their own culture. But at the same time they adored the European culture and products.
It’s famous that Koreans are eager to surpass Japan. Behind that they have envy and hatred against Japanese. This ambivalent feeling might come from their complex that Korea has been once a colony of Japan.

I’m a Korean guy that came across this site,
And you think Japanese don’t do that? Japanese people copy/buy international products too. Japan just makes a big deal out of it when other countries, particularly Korea, do it.
It’s really all the same between each country. Japanese “claims” to always have done something first but usually the originality was from the West.
I am Korean who is perfectly fine with each country mimicking other’s culture. To me, it is actually more of praise because if the country’s shows/drama/music were bad, why would they have bothered copying it in the first place? I must be the only one thinking it’s a good thing when a Japanese loves Korean culture, or vice versa. (My gf is Japanese and she loves Korean culture, as I love Japanese culture)

Only a complete idiot would buy into your highly negative one-sided view of South Korea with population of near 50 million people.
Although there are still many Koreans who have resentments toward Japanese people, generally the mood is that they want to improve the relationship with both Japanese and Chinese people. Koreans are weary of keeping this cold relationship with Japanese and do not think that ’surpassing’ Japanese economically is something that is entirely desirable. Global economy is very much so inter-connected in that one will suffer heavily if the other falls. Koreans just want to keep their country a good place to live; they don’t want misfortune for Japanese or Chinese.
There still much needed improvements for Koreans to make before they gain aknowledgements from larger number of foreign countries, but no body’s perfect and that also mean you too Alicia. So please don’t go around spreading negative view of a country unless if you feel that you are a god who has the right to make ridiculous judgments.

Blacks are rare, and the few famous black people Japanese know about are people like Bob Sapp or Bobby Ologon. The looks would be curiosity in the main. Some Japanese do not like black people, but then some people anywhere do not like black people, white people, yellow people, or pale chartreuse people. It is however probably true to say that of all the people a young Japanese girl could bring home to her parents, a black man may be looked on with the most suspicion.

Heres how I see it where I am sitting down in South Africa.
We have Koreans here running basically speed camera service provider. At first when I started working for them I thought nothing and just thought they were just people from somewhere else to me. But after several years of working closely with them I can say that from the above “Korean often break promise without hesitation…and they often tell lies, but they don’t have sense of sin at all” is completely true.
They also try to force us to adopt their culture and they definitely do “They do any dirty thing in order to accomplish their own goal.”
I wouldn’t just say this for nothing. They are a strange people who seem to be stuck halfway between a good western culture and an oppressive culture. I can’t figure it out. They love starcraft and internet as well.
Why must we be afraid to say the truth about them or why must some Japanese guy who makes a valid point be attacked if there is truth in what he is say. Work with Koreans in business and see how they think and maybe you will go from being neutral to not liking them to.
