Prostitution in South Korea: The Japanese meda reports

Here is a 4 part Japanese TV news report on prostitution in South Korea. A couple of the videos might be removed from YouTube soon, so I’ll provide a one or two sentence summary of each video link, so as to preserve some of the content:

Video 1: Hidden cameras are taken into a Korean “business club”. These are a popular place for businessmen to socialize and bring clients to. Men go to a karaoke room filled with liquor and girls are brought before them. The men select girls they like, who sit next to them and engage in coversation, drinking and singing. However, the end of the clip reveals something SHOCKING: a girl takes off her top! This is no ordinary business club, it is actually a front for PROSTITUTION. Clients can take the girl to a hotel with them for about 300,000 won (about 38,000 yen or 314 dollars).

Video 2: Next the hidden camera goes to another “business club”. The girls at this club take off their clothing almost immediately, and there is no illusion of not being a house of prostitution.

Video 3: A camera crew goes along with the South Korean police as they raid a massage parlor. All the female employees and the male costumers claim that non-sexual massages were going on there. However, the presence of lotion and condoms seems to suggest otherwise. After question female employees who say the men are paying huge amounts of money for normal massages, one girl admits that some other things were going on.

Video 4: A trip down Texas Street, the redlight district of the South Korean city of Busan. Prostitutes are standing in their brightly lit windows, trying to convince men to pay them for sex. Some yell out that their service is really good. After authorities tried to crack down on prostitution, there was some sort of protest( can someone who is better at Japanese please clarify exactly what they say about the protest? Is it a protest by sex workers against anti-Prostitution measures?).

I’m not really sure about the aim of this news report. Maybe it’s interesting to Japanese audiences to see the slightly different style of prostitution that goes on in Korea?

I think you meant 300,000 won in the first paragraph. 30,000 won is less than 4,000 yen = one cheap-ass hooker!

Amusing. Once I saw a Japanese program (complete with dramatic music) on cops busting “massage” parlors run by foreign women who were actually sleeping with the customers. Of course the police were made out to be heroes, and the hapless hookers made to look evil.

Still waiting on the expose of the fully operating fully sex-providing shops in certain quarters of Osaka and Tokyo (run entirely by Japanese). Or perhaps an expose of delivery/hotel health or image clubs? The hypocrisy on the part of certain media here is numbing.

James, where do these videos come from? Which show?

Yesterday evening, I saw an interesting news segment (about 20 minutes or so?) into an undercover investigation by the reported to expose hidden cameras in love hotels. Basically they plant the camera in the ceiling space (sometimes unknown to the hotel operator) poking through a hole in the emergency lighting. The camera feeds a HDD DVR with some custom hardware including a PCMCIA mobile phone card (for remote control rather than live streaming?) which sits there for a month recording the action.

The gang ended up getting busted; the ringleader has done time for exactly the same crime a few years back. Was about the best (only?) bit of investigative journalism I’ve seen in Japan.

I’m not sure what program they are from. I was searching around on YouTube for 韓国　keyword videos, and it came up. It might actually come from 2 different programs, as the narrator changes and it seems disjointed.

Personal experience… i had visited such a business club as per part 1, but the Korean i travelled with said “Just singing partner!!”
At the end of the night tho… “you want to take her to the hotel?”…

but ths is not Korean only… i have also been asked if i “want girls” on the streets of Shanghai, Shinjuku etc.

A bit of balance from the Japan media (and this website) would be do wonders.
