American Car Chases

If you’re in America, you’ve probably seen video this car chase. If you’re in Japan, you may have seen it on the news:

The Japanese media loves car chase videos from America. I can’t recall how many times I’ve seen American car chases on the news here, but it is a lot. I might not hear a lot about domestic news in America, but I definately won’t miss out an any awesome car chases that happened recently. When all these car chase videos are paired with the numerous crime shows that feature murders that happened in the USA, it’s not very suprising that the word “dangerous” comes out when I ask Japanese people what they think of America.

Sure, Japan is safer than America, but Japanese people seem to have a warped image of America. When I ask many people if they have ever visited America, they cite the dangerousness of America as the main reason why they haven’t. There is pratically no crime in major tourist areas, and it is very rare to hear about foreign tourists being the victim of violent crime.

Tourism is safer in Japan, but if Japanese people are looking for ultra-safe travel, they might as well never leave their country (or they can join a huge tour group and mindlessly follow around a flag-carrying guide).

Yes, when the only news Japanese get on the U.S. is about car chases, crack cocaine busts and hunting accidents, yeah it would seem dangerous. It’s the same reason I thought I might see some ninjas when I first came to Japan
