Tricking tribesmen with magic!

If you were to tell me that you wanted to make a TV show where magicians travel to Africa and scare the shit out of tribes with their tricks, I’d tell you it’s already been done. It aired on TV in Japan today. Here’s a short clip:

I was watching this and hoping that you were capturing this…

I’m not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, it certainly seems like these tribes people are being made fun of. But on the other hand, it is a magic show, and making fun of/poking fun at the audience is part of the show, to a certain extent, and hey, the people got to see some magic and the one guy got to play along too.

I’m still undecided, but my great and and uncle work as missionaries with the Masai tribes in Tanzania, so I’d like to ask them how they think the people might feel about this.

I thought it was cruel to take advantage of people who are ignorant of the existence of magic tricks, but I couldn’t help but laugh at it.

The part where they go to another tribe and stick a sword through one tribeman’s neck was pretty great. The people actually thought they had killed him. Oh man, those crazy backwards savages! Look at how they get scared of our superior magic tricks!

They’re lucky they didn’t seriously piss off some people and get killed.

wtf it’s not like he pulled a rabbit out a hat then genocided them for being tuti. judging by the african translator they guessed it was in the can of chips which any simple member of the audience would’ve guessed.

I remember seeing this exact trick on Hello Morning.

The elder seemed to really enjoy it at the end.
David Blaine also did something like this, going to Cuba and South America I think. The most important part of magic tricks is the reaction of the audience,especially for a tv show. Most people today in 1st world countries are too incredulous and know it’s all just sleight of hand and specially made props.
