Elementary schoolers interview Johnny Depp

August 9th, 2006 by James

Here are a couple kids from the Gunma International Academy interviewing Johnny Depp:

They are clearly trying their best to make jokes, but it’s unclear whether Johnny Depp actually finds them funny or not. As with any Japanese interview of a Hollywood celebrity, the TV show graciously eats up every smile or laugh that Johnny Depp makes, maintaining a worshipful attitude. This interview isn’t so bad, but I’ve seen other interviews where obviously strained smiles and forced laughter are immediately interpreted at genuine amusment. It seems that it doesn’t take much beyond a badly pronounced “konnichiwa” or “arigatou” for foreign celebrities to get buckets of love from the Japanese media.

While these two kids supposedly have all their classes in English, English trouble and nervousness made their attempt to interview Orlando Bloom painful to watch. I’ve got to admit though, their English is probably better than 99% of Japanese people.

Heh, Actually. I lived in Ota and my host brother went to GKA when this interview came out. It was very popular. Everyone had it Tivo’d. I must have seen in 20 times or so.
