Another Hero

Yesterday, Kazushi Sakuraba fought against Kestutis Smirnovas in a K-1 Hero’s event. Its subsequent upload to YouTube has become one of today’s most popular videos on the site:

For most of the match Smirnova brutally bombarded Sakuraba’s head with punches. Yet somehow Sakuraba did not give up or lose consciousness. This video is a true testament to the ability of one Japanese man to endure repeated blows to the head. Great job, Sakuraba.

I’ve always been a fan of Saku. Some people who say that the referee should’ve stopped the fight when Saku was being pounded away by Smirnovas, and got tangled in the ropes. The earlier fight between Akiyama and Kin was already contoversial (Kin got caught by an armbar, but didn’t tap), so some MMA fans were already a bit dissapointed by K-1. In this fight, the referee set them away from the ropes, which some one would argue gave Saku a reprieve that was just enough to take away Smirnovas’ earlier advantage. However, Saku hung in there and slapped on the armbar. Well done, Saku.

Interesting how standing a pummeling garners cheers of “Well, done”. Then again, the dude makes money. I will never understand boxing, K-1 etc.
