World Cup 2002 Flashback

Here’s a little flashback to the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup. In preparing a page that featured a map of World Cup soccer match venues, the Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo produced the following map(click it for a larger version):

To someone unfamiliar with the geography of the region, this map might seem OK. Japan sure seems small and cramped, while South Korea is a vast nation with plenty of space between the locations of its games. Let’s compare this to a map that is actually drawn to scale:

Wait a second! You mean South Korea isn’t actually twice the size of Japan?!! Surely South Korea is a larger and greater nation than Japan! How can it possibly be smaller! The Japanese must have convinced the nations of the world to alter their maps to make Japan better than Korea, just as they did with the East Sea!!!!

Nice find James!
I think it is funny how Japan doesn’t get along with its neighbors. South Korea get all bombastic over Dokdo, the Chinese and the Senkakus. The real clincher are the Kuriles. Japan wants those babies so any wavering they show towards Korea and China affects those (relatively stagnant) negotiations with Russia.

Or how about South Korea is more small and dense so the newspaper had to enlarge it to show the specifics of the location where the games are being held more clearly? If South Korea was to be drawn on the same scale as Japan, the dots would have been clamped together too closely. Vice versa, and the map would have been too large. Maps of the United States always show Hawaii bigger than its relative size to the continent. The opposite goes for Alaska.

Is this some sort of Hawaiian conspiracy?

God damn Japan Probe does it again, jumping to irrational conclusions without sufficient empirical evidence. What’s he gonna pull out of his ass next time? Why don’t you stick with your pedophile videos you jackass.

If you’ll notice, that map has Japan has a great many sites that are very close together on the scale of that map. The South Korea map didn’t have to be increased to its gargatuan size; they could have just increased its size to a point where the sites would be just about as far apart as they are in Japan. Given that empty white space to the right of Japan, couldn’t they have increased the size of Japan slightly to make its venues as clearly visible as those on the huge Korea? They have also placed South Korea in an off-center position, giving it the appearance of a normal map, with no boxes/lines seperating the two country sections to indicate a change in scale. Either they are liberately trying to diminish Japan, the map is poorly and unprofessionally made, or both.

That map of the United States has Hawaii in a box, and it is clearly indicated to be at a different scale.

i find it funny people are taking things to such a trivial matter. do people actually waste time n effort to search things like this out? yeah… i can see why country ties suck. or maybe i’m wrong, and there is a conspiracy…nah. i like this site, but this post is just ridiculous.
