Model airplane ethusiast

July 9th, 2006 by James

Japan is a great place for dorky hobbyists. There are shops in most towns catering to hobbies such as card games, wargames, comic creation, making plastic models and collecting random weird stuff. Here’s a video of a guy who takes his model airplane building quite seriously:

These models take 0.5 to 1 year to complete.

They are pretty cool looking. The man who made them only handles them with special gloves, to avoid tainting his work with human fingerprints.

The ultimate goal? To place the completed model airplane on this pane of glass, blow a fan at it to spin the propellers, and take photos! The photos look almost identical to a photo of real airplanes in flight! Pretty interesting, but I don’t think I’ll be quitting my job to make model airplanes any time soon..

The hobby stores are quite fun to browse in but, yeah, I can’t see spending all that time or money on something like building model planes. I did that kind of thing when I was 10 years old!
