Yeah, I can certainly tell you that I am contributing nothing at my English teaching job. I just wish they'd give me a visa to shovel shit, so I could contribute some helpful service.

Anything beats teaching English, but hey, when you do the math, you can really make a killing on private lessons.
I am glad Jenkins got a job. At least he is contributing in some way.

Well, having heard Jenkins speak English on TV a few times, I can say his English is pretty bad. Reminds of Billy Bob Thorton in Slingbade. Bad as that may be, he could probably still teach English in Japan. I've met a guy from New Zealand who barely passed high school, and claims to "have never passed an English class" in his life, who is now working at an ALT at a high school here. An ALT dispatch company has offered to have his working holiday visa turned into some sort of work visa.

I think it's pretty good he is getting a job. Better than just loafing around, I suppose.

... And I can't imagine his English is too good either. I mean, he barely made it out of middle school. His book is even translated in a way to make him sound anything but intelligent.

But hey, he's got a job, and that's great. He said he wanted to get a job because, although he is thankful for all that the Japanese government and people have done for him, he wants to provide for his family on his own. There are also a lot of people that are, ...upset, about how much money the government spent on him and his family (and still spend today) while at the same time when Japanese nationals were captured in Iraq the government made the families reimburse the government for all expenses.

I dont think that Jenkins would take up English teaching because he was forced to teach English while he was a 'resident' in North Korea. He was probably traumatised by it and has PTESL (Post Traumatic English as a Second Language) syndrome.
