It's not right to generalize a specific country because of the actions of some people. And.. Can I ask you one question? What country are YOU from?

The animosity Koreans feel toward Japanese is understandable, but what isn't is the racism many have toward other peoples. I have met many Koreans, and they seem to have a deep-seated racism against what they call "south east Asians" and Chinese. Clearly, its an attempt to boost themselves up by putting others down, but it doesn't make them any friends abroad, and if I had a choice, which I do, I would not visit Korea and spend any money on their economy.

You can't call me antikorean when I loved korean shows and Greg Paik. I came from a country ruled by imperialist china(vietnam). But if you want to criticizes imperialists then also you must criticize Gwanggaeto the "Great"(more like the "Ruthless".

Korea talk about imperialism. What about Gwanggaeto the "Great" who conquered small protomongol tribes(kind of like native americans)and forced tributes on them. Burned the palaces of shilla and baekje. Irony is that most koreans are shillans not korgeyeans. Sure some balheans/korgeyeans did return to koryeo(shilla's successor state) but they were a bunch of small elites like the last prince of balhae and they lived in south, not north, korea. Then why does koreans praised korgeyeo-simple because they missed manchuria. That is the true definition of imperialism.

I'm going to jump in on a tangent because I would like more information about this. I'm really, REALLY having a hard time understanding how a historical grudge dating back *500* years ago has any importance in this debate. It demonstrates that historically the Asian countries have been rivals for quite some time, but using this to explain why a modern Korea has problems with a modern Japan is ridiculous. Criticism against Japan and its failure to address what happened in World War 2 is much more understandable, but there has to be some kind of major educational breakdown if a 500 year old event is be used to justify current psychology. UK and France were long-time rivals, as was Germany; Germany was a central figure in two world wars and yet with all of that war and strife there is now a European Union. I'm massively simplifying things, but if Europe mirrored Asia would we be including King Charlemagne in dialog concerning modern politics?

Japan was and is the blacksheep of asia. This is true historically and in in modern geopolitics. Japan was always considered to a "barbaric" island nation in a very sinocentric asia. The closer you were to China, the more "civilized" you were and with Japan devolving into feudalism, it wasn't viewed highly by rest of Asia. With Hideyoshi's invasions this prejudice was only cemented and the atrocities committed during Japan in its imperial era didn't help change this bias. As crazy as it sounds, this prejudice against Japan still affects how Japan's neighbors view Japan.

visiting and actually living in the country are two completely different things...

I've never visited filthy Korea but I do in fact live here...

I've NEVER seen anything like Korea. They are obsessed with money and saving face. Even more so than America! They are one of the top countries consumed with consumer debt. Why? Because they will think nothing at charging a $1000 cell phone to keep up appearances but have no investing assets, no promising career and no plans to pursue the later two. There are so many people in this tiny country that its a cut throat competitive atmosphere that spills into their social skills. I've been stepped over and pushed by people at the ticket counters on the subways. A waiting line is something of a foreign word and notion as its evident in their driving! People are so impatient they drive on the sidewalks to bypass you!!! Being a pedestrian is a scary thing around here. I could type until there was no more daylight about how horribly rude, impatient, disgusting and sad these people are but I've already spent too much time on Korea!

Because they will think nothing at charging a $1000 cell phone to keep up appearances but have no investing assets, no promising career and no plans to pursue the later two. There are so many people in this tiny country that its a cut throat competitive atmosphere that spills into their social skills. I’ve been stepped over and pushed by people at the ticket counters on the subways. A waiting line is something of a foreign word and notion as its evident in their driving! People are so impatient they drive on the sidewalks to bypass you!!! Being a pedestrian is a scary thing around here. I could type until there was no more daylight about how horribly rude, impatient, disgusting and sad these people are but I’ve already spent too much time on Korea!

It's simply the truth. Korean culture is just plain RUDE. I've lived here for almost 2 years and this is not a positive representation of Asian culture. This country for some odd reason has lost its way in society. Japan was a lovely country and the most recent visit to Tokyo was a much needed breathe of fresh air from Korea. The Korean government is also teaching children in school through their school books a very warped sided interpretation of their place in world history. Why they are the smartest. Why they are the best world athletes. Why they somehow invented the alphabet across the globe???? Its sad really. Most of these misguided students grow eager to expand into abroad educational opportunities and have a huge dose of reality that shakes the world they were brought up to believe was so cleverly shaped by them.

Noah, if rabid racism is a "custom" of Japan, it should NOT be followed but repudiated and condemned. The behavior being complained of here is not based on any respectable "custom" but based on racist stereotypes bad faith toward Koreans, e.g., eating snacks before purchasing, using chum while fishing, etc., are things that are not rude nor cause for complaint.

Isn't 3 million yen like 25 thousand dollars. That's not even one years salary for one person to clean the beach. I guess throwing a "million" in there makes it look a bit more shocking.

Japan hs been the "black sheep" of Asia by whose standards, exactly? And do you have any historical supposition for this "Japan was founded by criminals" idea? I have only come across it a couple of times, and each time it has been dismissed as nonsense. And even though you attempt to soften your stance by referring to modern Australia as a positive example, to what extent is Australia a "black sheep"? It isn't, and its criminal past is a lot more recent that Japan's putative one. So how could any supposed founding by criminals some two millennia ago have any impact at all?

When saying things like "Ever heard of the Seven Year War? If you’re a Westerner, you probably haven't" it might help to point out exactly what you mean rather than suggesting Westerners are ignorant and leaving it at that. Especially as there was a "Seven Years War" in European history that most Europeans, if they know anything about the term, will be most likely to associate with it. Turns out the term here refers to the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1582 and 1597, and is not a term used in Japanese history, but presumably Korean. So in other words to be a Westerner familiar with the term you would need to be one familiar with Korean history (or possibly Chinese). On a blog called Japan Probe, most readers are more likely to be familiar with Japanese history. They are also likely to be familiar with the name Hideki Tojo. However Hitler and Tojo cannot be compared in any sensible manner - Hitler was the undisputed dictator of Nazi Germany, Tojo was the Prime Minister - and didn't even manage to be PM for the entire war. Japan's war leadership was much more a group effort.

I have never heard mainland war suffering dismissed as "trivial", but despite the various atrocities visited by the Japanese on mainland Asia, one thing in their favour is that there was never anything analogous to the Final Solution.

Manga and history books depicting Japanese actions in WW2 in a more positive light are published because Japan has a quite free and robust publishing industry, and such things are legal. "Japan" doesn't release revisionist manga - authors and publishers do. Remember the difference. So Kobayashi Yasunori can publish a series of rant-filled sensationalist Sensouron manga and make money. And people who think he is a blithering idiot can publish books that refute him. Just like the Kokumin no Rekishi debates. History TEXTBOOKS for school use have far more stringent standards. No major high school text denies war crimes (the Tsukurai textbook is neither remotely major, nor a denier: at most a minimizer (stating for example that the Nanking Incident death toll "is subject to much debate" rather than denying it outright)), and Japanese historians are generally very anti-Imperialism anyway, with a left-wing stance that dates back to at least Noro Eitarou's prewar study of Japanese capitalism.

There's debate, which may be joined by anyone who has anything intelligent or helpful to add, but to dismiss it as a "fight" is to give up on calm and rational analysis from the start and resort to emotionalism.

"How damn the tourists know what they have to and should not have to without any guide prases."

There is a Chinese saying, when you visit a country, you follow the customs of that country. By what you say, they probably have to put up all sorts of signs: No peeing here, No pooping here. You can't just do whatever you want in a foreign country. How about this, KoreanYoungBoy, I will go to your house, and start trashing around, why? because you didn't tell me I can't do it.

You were defending korea because you are a korean, and you were trying to justify all the bad things they do, shame on you.

(you can comment all you want, I am not replying or reading it =))

There is a Chinese saying, when you visit a country, you follow the customs of that country. By what you say, they probably have to put up all sorts of signs: No peeing here, No pooping here. You can’t just do whatever you want in a foreign country. How about this, KoreanYoungBoy, I will go to your house, and start trashing around, why? because you didn’t tell me I can’t do it.

Increasing Korean tourists from a few thousands to 40,000! could bring much more headaches, but is this so serious to be aired? They throw a stone on the door because the door looks like holding stones for long and that's a common pratice of tourists if you go anywhere in the world. If that's very rude to Japanese religion or something, Japanese locals were able to put any warning or something. How damn the tourists know what they have to and should not have to without any guide prases. I think it's very immature to go over all these, but to me all these bad pratices from Korean are very minor and can happen anywhere where number of tourists increased to 10 times than before and I guess the main problem is not tourists spending money on the island, but the Japanese locals not being prepared and doing nothing to regulate the increased tourists. Basically, I haven't seen locals complaining for incrased tourists spending more money on their area. Hey! Am I lost for something here?

Lets not forget the fact that there is a lot of resentment towards the Japanese so who can blame them really, Korea is an extremely nice place ive visted many times and can honestly say i find Korean people very pleasant indeed. Im not racist at all but i do find that in the Uk and my visit to Tokyo, Japanese people can be very aggressive and easily upset at the most silliest of small things so i think your report is unfair here. Also a lot of people in the UK & the US will often eat something in a supermarket and then purchase the empty item at the checkouts, its called being hungry!!! Nothing outrageous about that, maybe people in Japan need to chill out a bit and stop being so serious

In Korea as well as in China, people have been taught again and again what evils Japan and Japanese military had done before August 1945. For them Japan is a destiny enemy. If some Japanese right-wing politicians behave ethnocentric, insist some positive opinion about former Japanese imperialism or deny wartime wrong doings like "Comfort Women" or "Rape of Nanking" case, then Koreans or Chinese will be so convinced as if they are 100% right and Japanese are 100% wrong.

Of course they know today's Japan is not the same as old-time imperial. But every time something inconvenient occurs, they tend to be easily upset about Japan. They have certain prejudices against Japanese people who are now not that evil like some 65 yeas ago.

I am pretty critical about Japan's wartime crimes and modern-history education and so on. But at the same time I cannot completely contradict that Koreans and Chinese are so small minded or mentally twisted against Japanese. It's unfortunate enough and embarrassing for Japan.

My two cents on the debate….

Sometimes, you can’t just “let the past go”. Japan isn’t too keen on letting the Hiroshima past go anytime soon are they?

Japan has always been the black sheep of Asia. It’s been that way ever since they were first created as a nation. Japan has traditionally been the number-one getaway asylum for political prisoners, criminals, and other exiles from their own country, because it’s a small archipelago off the coast of Korea. Now, I’m not saying that as an anti-Japanese statement or anything, bare that in mind. Australia also started their history as a criminal colony, but that’s not having a huge impact on their current status right? What I am trying to do is shed some light on why Japan has always been a black sheep in the family. And most likely, it will remain that way until humanity becomes extinct or something. It’s nothing that can be helped. Ever heard of the Seven Year War? If you’re a Westerner, you probably haven’t. But basically, Japan has too much of a negative history with China, Korea, and other Asian powers to ever work themselves out of the black sheep status they have.

That said, their horrific World War 2 crimes are only the tip of the ice berg as to why Japan is so antagonized. You hear about the evils of Hitler and the Nazi Party, and how the Jews were victims in the horrible Holocaust war crime every day, but how many times have you heard anybody dedicating some memory to victims of Hideki Tojo? Do you even know who Hideki Tojo is? Most Americans don’t. But they know exactly who Hitler is. Anti-Semitism is also a big thing in Asia, Korea in particular. Many Asians are extremely bitter that their suffering under the Japanese Empire during WW2 is considered trivial compared to the Jews’ persecution under Hitler. Sixty something years after it all happened, Japan continues to release revisionist manga and history books that either deny their war crimes, or paint themselves in a more palatable light (“We only did it to HELP them! All those Chinese guys we shot down off cliffs were criminals to begin with! No, we don’t care if that was half the population of the entire country!”). Can you imagine the same thing going on in Germany today?

A lot of Americans find it easy to just say “Koreans should just get over it,” but the thing is, it’s not that simple. Like I said before, WW2 is just the tip of the ice berg. It’s a big, ugly ice berg you can’t truly know of unless you’re Asian. And it’s not an ice berg that’s melting away soon. My advice? Just don’t say anything. If you take the Korean side, you’ll look like an idiot. And if you take the Japanese side, you’ll look like an even bigger idiot. Don’t reprimand Koreans of being racist, don’t “forgive” the Japanese for their crimes. Just let it go. It’s not your fight, and it’s not your debate.

You should see the japanese tourists in Manila. They go up to almost any female in public and ask them how much they are to screw. They asked my sister if they can give her about 200 us dollars to have her pee and screwed by two guys in their 50s. She just came home crying. There are some loud Koreans here but I haven't seen them grabbing any random girls off the street to ask for a "favor". I don't know what's more rude. Being noisy in public areas or being f-ing perverts.

There are some loud Koreans here but I haven’t seen them grabbing any random girls off the street to ask for a “favor”. I don’t know what’s more rude. Being noisy in public areas or being f-ing perverts.

just going to add that every country is slightly self-indulgent. Americans news is all about America. Most of the news about other countries is fairly negative., but so is most news. Here is Britain, we learn about a lot of american news, but again it's usually negative, although we have plenty of American TV shows, and movies to know, even if you haven;t been there, that there are many cool, nice, friendly Americans. Now it must be the same in Korea and Japan, although possibly slightly exaggerated. Whilst there may be many anti-Korean, or anti-Japanese, or anti-American parts on Jap or Korean news, it doesn't mean that represents something totally wrong. The news is there, it might be slightly biased, but only because maybe that;s what a lot of people want to hear. You can't say Koreans are rude. So many have manners like my mom and her family. I'm not lying when I say I went to Korea last year the people were among the friendliest I have ever met, and so generous. sure I saw some idiotic Koreans though. I remember one particular incident when there were these OLD Koreans in their 60s running around chucking their shoes around the boat. They were obviously stupid, weird country folk with no manners, but these people were by far from the majority. I love east asia, i was born in Hong Kong, loved Korea and seoul, and would love to visit Japan. east asian people need to realise to respect each other because I find a lot of aspects of their countries
they should be very proud of.

Right for a start - Koreans can't go anywhere without Kimchi. Its their dish, they love it, their national dish. Secondly believe it or not but these people do not represent all Koreans, as certain Japanese people might think. I mean how racist and narrow-minded can you get? I am half Korean and half Scottish. I hate the Japan v Korea thing. It makes east asians look backwards, because in very few other places in the world is there this bitterness between certain people from these two nations. If i made a video like this about Germans and posted it on the net, saying that Germans are so rude and have no manners and shouldn't come to our country, I would be most probably be arrested, or at the very least hated. What is the point in this video? what is it trying to achieve?

Jake, I have no idea what you're trying to say. I follow fishery management regulations pretty closely. Any law that applies only to foreigners is only racially motivated especially given historical, cultural context as well as the empirical fact that "foreign" fishermen are all Koreans. Give me a break. A law serious about fisheries management would involve comprehensive regulations and limits that applies to anyone who fishes irregardless of race, especially given the reputation of Japan's commercial fishing industry.
