Ariana:

I would think that it has something to do with heavy western influence on Japan. Many famous figures who are well-liked in America/Europe are also popular in Japan. Historical manga is also very popular with kids here. I'm not sure if it is the same as the manga you mentioned, but a series published by Shueisha is extremely popular with kids here. Most of the comics were made in the 1980's, but they are still widely read. Yesterday I saw elementary school reading their biographical comic book about Florence Nightengale. The elementary school had posted a big chart showing what kinds of books the kids like to read, and "rippa na hito" (great person) books were tied with fiction as the most popular for grades 3, 4 and 5.

Hi,
The way Japanese rank their 100 favorite historical figures tells you the way they see and judge things. Japanese are great people and I'm always curious to know what they belief and how they see life in generally.

We, the rest of the world, have to learn a lot from Japanes people.

yours
Abdishakur.

[...] You may already know that The Beatles (ya know, the music group) are insanely popular in Japan. In fact, the Japanese recently voted John Lennon as their 27th favorite historical figure. But the other Beetle (ya know, the insect) is also quite popular, especially with the kiddies. They love them stag and rhino beetles. There’s a card game, Mushiking - The King of the Beetles that kids play. They even keep them as pets. And possibly, beetles may even be sold in vending machines. I haven’t witnessed that last one yet, so who knows if that business is still profitable, but if I have a chance I’ll liberate one and let you know. I really don’t think it’s a very good idea for the beetle. [...]

[...] Taken from Japan Probe: “Last night NTV aired a program featuring the results of a survey that asked Japanese people to choose their favorite great person from history (超大型歴史アカデミー史上初1億3000万人が選ぶニッポン人が好きな偉人ベスト100発表). It was a pretty interesting show, featuring occasional re-enactments of scenes from the lives of history’s great men/women(by Japanese actors/comedians, of course). During my downtime at work today I managed to translate the list and provide links to information on each of the figures.“ [...]

I saw the show. It was interesting indeed. Very insightful comment about Japanese people liking hard-workers. We Americans prefer get-rich-quick stories and real rebels, I guess.
I wonder if all the hard-working Japanese realize that their boss guy on top is really raking it in...
