Japanese Buddhist Monks Speak Out About Tibet
A video of a monk representing Shoshazan Engyoji Temple reading a statement concerning the current situation in Tibet is one of today’s most-viewed videos on YouTube Japan. The original clip has no English translation attached, but YouTuber Notatall07 has uploaded the following subtitled version of the monk’s statement:
We, Japanese Buddhist monks are now put to the test. We cannot help expressing our deep sadness and protest against China’s military actions in Tibet that deprive Tibetans from religious freedom. As religionists and Buddhist, we cannot overlook Tibetan monks and people’s suffer any more. The most important thing is that Tibetans preserve their religious tradition of Tibetan Buddhism (Lamaism) by Tibetan people’s free intention.
You might wonder what monks throughout Japan are doing. Each sect and religious organization in Japan have devoted their energies to the restoration of Buddhist temples related to their temples in various parts of China after the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China. I myself was also involved in the restoration of Buddhist temples in China.
However, it was not possible to exchange with Buddhist temples in China without the approval of Beijing (government) and actually we had no freedom. Most monks across Japan know this and think that this might be unchanged even in the future. We also know that Beijing (government) feels unpleasant when Japanese Buddhist organizations exchange with the Dalai Lama. I think that religious freedom is the most important issue.
However, Japanese Buddhists have not expressed anything in 3 weeks or more after the Tibetan case broke out. If Chinese Buddhism association is our important friend, why do we tell nothing to it? Is it good without doing? Tibet that has accumulated its history as a Buddhism country with the leadership of the Dalai Lama is about to disappear. To save them, we should give the voice from grass roots as religionists and Buddhists.
However, if we do, Chinese Buddhists concerned may protest the religious sect I belong to and I may be scolded by it. So, it does not mean that I request you to act together with me. But, I ask you who are Buddhist monks and supporters to think voluntarily with this case as a start. Some of you as Buddhist monks may plan to visit the temples related to your temples during the Beijing Olympics 2008.
Under such circumstances, what will you talk with them? If you are not able to say your opinion to your Chinese counterparts in a resolute attitude, what can we preach to our supporters and followers in Japan? This might be the last chance for us as religionists and Buddhists.

His argument is persuasive.
China-Japan relationship is important, but Japan as the best friend of China should warn China that it is wrong to oppress Tibetan.
And China should learn from the past: it was wrong to invade Tibet…Tibet massacre was wrong just as Nanjing massacre was wrong.
I agree ponta.
Tragically, the Chinese leadership is incapable of admitting it is ever wrong. I was there in the early ’80s when Deng Xiao Ping was initiating economic reforms and beginning the introduction of the market economy we see taking place today. They were twisted inside out trying to justify what they were doing-abandoning Mao- while at the same time trying to revere him.
“Please give us the film.”
I hope this problem can be solved soon,
it really pains for all of the Buddhist to see this tragedy to happen,
the Japanese Monk is doing the right thing, this shows that there’s still a lot of people who cares for Tibet-China conflict
Dalai Lama himself was the weakness of Tibet. Where’s Buddha when they need it?
How do you know what the most viewed video on Youtube Japan is? I’m going to have to call BS on this. There’s no separation in terms of the videos between any languages on that site, and any ranking of “Japanese” videos would just come down to cherry picking videos that happen to be in Japanese.
what?
im pretty sure he went to jp.youtube.com and then went to most viewed videos today. maybe you didnt know that youtube has a seperate website for a lot of countries. well now you do.
Have you ever visited YouTube.com? Seriously.
Ok, never mind,
http://jp.youtube.com/browse?s=mp
does have specific worldwide and Japan listings.
Actually, I see the deal. In many cases, the &e=ja_JP tag in the address determines the listings, which may or may not be dropped depending how you switch and what you’re looking at. If you go to jp.youtube or de.youtube, that determines nothing other than the interface language (though they do talyor the main page to this too). I mean:
http://www.youtube.com/browse?s=mp&c=22&l=&e=ja_JP
Are Japanese rankings overlaid on a English site.
But yes, I suppose there is a specific Japan ratings available, as to whatever qualifies a view to be in Japanese or something else, I remain vigilantly skeptical.
So would that mean you’re skeptical of any form of simple internet tallying? Or are you implying that the Japanese have a unique and corrupt manner of counting page views and clicks?
Just stop trying to think, because it’s not working for you.
Montsan,
You are the only one that has implied Japanese to be any different from any other youtube language in the world. wtg.
My god. Sarcasm is completely lost on you, isn’t it?
As Buddhists shouldn’t they condemn the violence perpetrated by Tibetans against Chinese as well? The Dalai Lama definitely has.
I think some of that violence was instigated by the Chinese police themselves, dressed up as monks. Here’s a picture.

China get out of Tibet. Give the country back to peaceful and Religious Tibitians
Religion is stupid.
This is the beginning of the end of religion (finally).
You want some supernatural being to help you? Then go Get off this planet now and meet your supernatural thing you call god and leave the rest of us sane people on this planet alone.
Go with your god. Go! Get off this planet, NOW, and leave us in peace.
AJ Why don’t you believe in something higher then yourself? Do you think peace is just given? No, the thought of PEACE and PEACEFUL throught is a TEACHING. AJ you need to rethink about your anger.
The default question is, as always, “why DO you believe in ’something higher than yourself’?” Depending on its context of course it can refer to people superior in rank, but almost always it refers to supernatural beings – deities. Without a single shred of material proof of their existence, non-belief should be the default. The idea that without such belief we would not have peace or the concept thereof is also a serious fallacy.
